Highlight
Its beginnings were rather modest: George IV in 1824 convincing the government to purchase 38 major paintings including works by Raphael and Rembrandt. Marvelous pieces from today’s national collection are now gloriously exhibited in the National Gallery, whose main building was a Neo-classical wonder in itself. Visit this major city landmark and be amazed by more than 2,300 paintings from the mid-13th to the 20th century. Since the collection officially belongs to the British public, entry to the main collection is free. Special exhibitions, however, may entail paying specific charges.
