China’s largest city, Shanghai, is youthful and vivid with urban colors. In the past decades, it has put on a cosmopolitan vest geared to attract the young and ambitious. Rapid modernization is the key, focused on developing the city’s architecture, infrastructure, and entertainment offerings.
If Beijing represents epic history and Xi’an majestic sights, Shanghai represents ideal contemporary urban living.
The possibilities for leisure are endless in this city. Surrender to the beauty of nature at People’s Park. Dine al fresco along Xintiandi’s chic cafés and restaurants. Spend the day at the upscale boutiques and shopping malls lining French Concession; then at nightfall, party away in the numerous bars and nightclubs found in this upbeat district.
Positioned near the mouth of the divine Yangtze River, Shanghai served as a thriving commercial port and bailiwick of Western powers in the past centuries. Now it has spawned a lifestyle revolution that is all its own; the tourist in you will yield to the torrent of neon colors and entertainment in true Shanghai fashion.
BY AIR
The Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), 18 miles east of the city, is one of China’s international airports and is the main hub for China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines. Various flights to and from Europe, North America, Australia and Asia can be booked at this airport.
BY TRAIN
Located north of the city, the Shanghai Railway main station is another major entry and exit point. Trains depart and arrive to and from Beijing, Hong Kong, Suzhou, and other major China cities.
BY SHIP
Cruise ships dock at the Waihongqiao Lu terminal, about a mile north of the Bund in Shanghai.
BY TAXI
You could easily spot taxi stands right outside the arrival halls of Pudong Airport. Taxis are preferable for most visitors since they are plentiful and fares are relatively cheaper than in most Western cities.
BY BUS
Buses are also good transport options. From the airport, there are seven bus routes leading to different parts of the city. The airport buses operate 7am-11pm.
The signs on buses and taxis can be confusing. Write your destination down in Chinese characters on a piece of paper before setting out.
BY METRO
The inexpensive and ever-reliable metro runs from 5:30am-11:00 pm.
• Line 1 runs from Gongfu Xincun in the north to Xinzhuang via Shanghai Railway Station.
• Line 2 runs eastward from Songhong Road, links to the Maglev at Longyan Road, and crosses under the Huangpu River.
• Line 3 runs south from Jiangyang Road, looping westward
• Line 4 runs via Shanghai Railway Station, terminating at the Shanghai South Railway Station.
• Line 5 extends to the west and south from Line 1’s Xinzhuang terminal.
BY FERRY
This is also a nice way of seeing the city, by ferry on the Huangpu River. Ferries cross the river 6am-11.30 pm.
